An Eveing (or Three) Wudaoying Hutong
As summer reaches its soupy boiling point and bands start falling off the stage in a sweaty drunken haze (Bedstars!), I decided that it was time to get out for a night of open-air fun. My destination? Wudaoying Hutong. Running between the Lama Temple and Gulou, Wudaoying has recently gentrified into a competitive hot spot with new storefronts turning over seemingly every month. My original plan was to map out a single night of fun. But after wandering around, I decided no fewer than three would do. Try ‘em out.

在春天里，死飞–死飞党伊泉的都市骑行生活

天气越来越暖和，骑自行车的人也越来越多了，不过，将骑车变成玩车的人还是较少数的。自行车有很多种，大致分为公路自行车、山地自行车、场地自行车、小轮车、技巧车等。死飞自行车英文名叫Fixed Gear，中文叫“固定齿轮自行车”，公路自行车的一种，是一项源于快递邮差的自行车运动。这种自行车只有19个部件，采用单一的固定齿轮，而不是可以倒转的飞轮，通常不安装刹车。玩家可以做出漂移、倒踩等各种花样动作。在北京生活了近7年的德国女孩伊泉被称做“京城死飞第一人”，直到2007年，她才在北京的大街上发现了第二个骑死飞自行车的人—— 一个美籍华人，而伊泉对死飞自行车的热爱和专业程度也绝对配得上这个称呼。

Wudaoying: new life in an old Hutong
Leading the way for the alleyway’s new life is the Vineyard Café, which opened 2006. For a long time, the café was the only reason for most people to visit the alleyway, and many of the café owner’s neighbors were skeptical of his vision. “They couldn’t understand how a western restaurant would possibly work in a hutong like this in Beijing. Obviously, we chose this spot because it’s a great hutong and because of its location, near the Confucius Temple, the Lama Temple and ease of access, compared to Houhai and Nanluoguxiang,” Vineyard Cafe’s owner, Will Yorke, explained. “Other people have since realized the quality of the street and moved in as well.”
