As mentioned in our last Natooke newsletter we have some biking events arranged. If you either ride your bike to the specified “Bike to JUE” events or join our bike ride to these events you will get a stamp on the “Bike to JUE” spoke card. The more stamps the bigger the prize. We heard only the first 10 people that have 5 or more stamps get a NLGX “Kommute” hoodie. But if you have less stamps do not worry, you can get a button, or key ring or NLGX t-shirts. Just need to ride your bike to the events!

At each Bike to JUE event there will be a place to park your bike guarded by NATOOKE bike people to ensure the safety of your bike while you are enjoying the JUE event.

3. Bike to JUE Event: Mongolian Bling China Premiere & Asian Cinema Week Opening Party

Just come there with your bike and we will ride together in a pace suitable to everybody along the Worker’s Stadium North road past the Zhangzizhong Lu to the venue Yugong Yishan.

Join JUE | Film and Asian Cinema Week to celebrate the China premiere of Mongolian Bling. The festivities kick off at 7:00PM with the film screening. Afterwards, join director Benj Binks for a Q&A session and later, a special performance by film stars Gennie and Quiza, Beijing MC Nasty Ray and members of Hanggai.

4. Bike to JUE Event: MATZKA

Some people think Shuangjing Bridge is far away from Sanlitun. But it is not. You can ride your bike to the event or meet us at 7pm at the Worker’s Stadium North gate. We will ride together on Dongdaqiao Street and then Guanghua Street to the 3rd ring road. It is only 5km to the Mako Live House so should take less than 30 min even with a big group cycling together.

MATZKA are a Golden Melody (Chinese Grammy award)-winning reggae band from Taidong, Taiwan. Composed of lead singer Matzka, drummer Mavaliw, guitarist Sakinu and bassist Nawan, they are members of the Paiwan and Puyuma Taiwanese Aboriginal tribes. Combining the traditional tribal music of their youth with the contemporary reggae, hip-hop, folk, rock and even heavy metal, MATZKA create an equally modern and traditional, completely unique “Taiwanese Reggae” sound.

If you do not like riding your bike alone in the dark then you can join our organized ride starting at 8pm at the Chaoyang Park South Gate. If you have a bike light, then please bring it.

Singer-songwriter Jeff Lang has built up a reputation for startlingly original performances, working without a set list, allowing the unique energy of each night to shape the songs. 798 Art district seems so far away from the city, but it actually is not. For example from the Worker’s Stadium North Gate it is not even 8km away. If you want to ride your bike but do not know the way you can join us. We have 2 meeting points for this ride: 1. Worker Stadium North Gate leaving at lunch time, and the second one at the East 3rd Ring Road Lufthansa Center at 12:30.

BLF is proud to sponsor the prestigious and much sought after Australian National Slam Championship, and we are excited this year to host the 2012 champion, CJ Bowerbird. Bowerbird uses poetry to explore what it is to be human. He writes about things we have lost, things we never had and things that are slipping through our fingers. Humor is a key feature of much of Bowerbird’s poetry, and he won the hearts of the people of Australia with his extraordinary performances. Come and see this poet at his best.

8. Bike To JUE Event: Translation Slam: Cross Talk

Get ready, word nerds. Our Translation Slam is back! We pit two translators against each other to compare, contrast and clash over the nuances of translation. Each translator will present their versions as our host Danni Zheng leads an open and lively discussion with the audience. Having tackled fiction, music lyrics, subtitles and even the dreaded poetry at past slams, our translators will take on Cross-Talk this time. Join us as we crack open the often confusing and impenetrable Chinese comedy form and find out what your taxi driver is always chuckling about.

10. Bike To JUE Event: Two Wheels Keep Rolling ft. Liu Yusi and Thruoutin

Brad Seippel (aka thruoutin) and Liu Yusi (of the Randy Abel Stable) are both musicians who enjoy riding bicycles, and they’ve both had travelled long distances by bike. On the afternoon of Sunday March 24, Brad and Yusi will talk about their how their cycling trips and riding experiences had influenced their life, thoughts and music. After the talks the two will each perform a set, and then play together in an ambient-folk-blues jam.
This event is co-organized by the local Eco/Arts collective Greening the Beige.

03/17  2:00pm Bike Polo @ Workers Gymnasium West Gate

Bike polo is a fun game. You need to just sit on any kind of bike and hit the ball into the goal with the polo mallet. It is quite easy which makes it fun for beginners. Anybody that can try it out. We have the ball and the mallets. Just come by with your bike, no matter what kind, even the Flying Pigeon bike is fine. If you do not have a bike you can still come by – we always have spare bikes. We play every Sunday at 2pm. This coming Sunday there might be someone filming so wear nice clothes.
