Mechanics of A Mobike

screen-shot-2016-12-07-at-2-22-34-pm

The design of the Mobike bicycles are where this program earns our endorsement over other programs.  See, these bicycles are intended to be universal, durable, low-maintenance and visually unique (to aid in standing apart from your average bike).  Also, these bicycles’ intended use is very specific.  They’re designed to be very functional, simple and easy to use for short trips: Any trip they may be a tad too long to walk or just too short to grab a cab or hop on the Metro. When it comes to this bike share program the thing most readily criticized, and by cyclists in particular, is the ride, feel and comfort of these bikes.  But having ridden hundreds of bicycles ourselves and spent many countless days toiling away in the saddles of more than a dozen personal bikes we’ve come to one conclusion: There is no one perfect bike.  You can have a great bike for a single function and that’s where Mobike comes in.  Here’s how.

It’s Universal

Ok.  So maybe you’re 190 cm not. Then maybe you’re thinking, well, there’s no way a Mobike fits me.  And it’s true, but the fact is your height places you on the cusp of the bell curve.  The Mobike bicycles however are made to be ridden by anyone between 140-170cm.

This is a huge difference in height and it’s safe to say it won’t fit the majority of riders in a perfect, built-to-order way, but remember.  These bikes are intended for short-paced trips.  Nothing ridden at breakneck speeds or long enough to get a hardy workout.

The saddles are broad and have some cushion.  The handlebars strike a unique angle but offer a natural hand position, one that is elevated enough to give any rider a comfortable, upright posture.  Brakes have long levers that offer hands of any size plenty of grip and offer a smooth action.

Durable And Low-Maintenance

This is where Mobike really shines over its competitors.  Some serious thought went into the ultimate construction of the bike.  Regarding the universal fit of the bikes, a factor many riders may complain about, is truthfully it’s greatest benefit in terms of its durability.  Less moving parts results in less likely for mechanical failure.

The frame is a solid piece of 6000 series aluminum.  Resistance to rusting and erosion it means this bike can handle being left out in the rain.  Additionally the bearings connecting the fork to the frame are a unique design to reduce the likelihood of maladjustment and failure.

The drivetrain is also especially cool.  Instead of your standard chain and cog, Mobike utilizes a crankshaft.  This is similar to what’s used in in cars.  The benefit of all this?  You can deliver motion from pedals to the wheel efficiently. There’s no worry of a rusty chain.  No dropping your chain and being left stranded.  Most importantly there’s no exposed moving parts so the typical rider doesn’t have to worry about getting their hands dirty or finding their skirt caught and torn in the chain.

One of our favorite little features to it all though is that the bike is completely assembled with a unique type of bolt.  Known as a security torx, the bolts that hold this bicycle together are designed to make it more difficult to readily tamper with the bicycle.  This helps greatly reduce the threat that unbeknownst to you, a vandal may have tinkered with the bike making it unsafe to ride.
