Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop.

This past week you may have noticed we pulled a prank on our friends. Anymore at the shop we’ve got a million-and-one projects going on, but a big one that’s been on our plates for the past few months was re-doing our old shop sign. The original had begun to fall to bit sand was looking a bit worse for the wear, so as they say: Out with the old, in with the new! We set in on it early Friday morning hoping to have it installed along with a few other minor changes in the shop sorted before the Friday Night Ride. As we began tearing out the old sign, an idea crossed our minds. “What if this were the last Friday Night Ride, ever?” With a picture of the sign half removed, it had the potential to convince a few folks that hey, maybe it was the last one ever.

We’d supposed that people would see through such a foolish trick. We’d been talking about our sign change for months. We’d also recently published a detailed schedule of upcoming rides. And to top it all off, we’d just written a story explaining our passion behind organizing the Friday Night Ride. Regardless, the word blew up. Within no time, our community had braced for the worse and there was a barrage of messages regarding Natooke’s imminent closure. Whoops. We had a good laugh about it and got back to the dedicated labors of completing everything we’d set aside for today in anticipation of surprising everyone when they showed up for the ride. The sign went in. The lights went on. We moved the furniture around. And we got our new Asahi tap flowing. Everything was looking good.

Within a short while the buzz petered out as most people caught onto our mean little gag. People began to trickle in. Faces old and new came rolling up to the doors and that usual Friday Night Ride vibe took hold. The conversation was vibrant. The fact that only a few hours earlier most people feared that we’d be closing had been left to the occasional curse under the breath. “I knew they were joking! Liars!” Truth is however, we can’t stop. We’re like a giant steamroller of a bicycle. We’ve finally got the wheels in motion and bike life for the folks of Chengdu has never looked better. More importantly, we won’t stop. Why? As we like to always remind everyone. We love doing what we do for both cyclists and non-cyclists here in our shared city.
