Bikes are like a lot of every day items. In the modern world most people don’t much care for fixing their own things. Most every article in your day-to-day life including clothing, home appliances, your car, your bicycle, whatever it may be are not designed to be readily repaired. Some manufacturers will even go out of their way to make it more difficult to make repairs on your own!

This is why we love old mountain bikes. They were purpose built, versatile, yet simple. With old mountain bike group sets a lot of consideration went into the ease of repair for group sets. Different components could easily be mixed up without affecting one another’s use. Not to mention the fact that even an average piece of equipment was built to last.

What this means is repairs are generally simple. Nor do you often need to make them. But best of all, if in the event you had to fix something, it could be done quickly and affordably. In this regard, they just don’t make bikes like they used to. So when we got our hands on this old Diamondback we were more than excited to give it an overhaul.

Working on a bike like this is super fun. It’s like re-lighting a campfire from the coals. A few simple tweaks and voila! It’s returned to it’s former glory. And this bike is chock full of nifty features that make it a great all-around ride. It’s a solid TIG welded steel frame, Shimano Deore DX group set with a wide gear range, Araya rims with a solid BMX block tread tire. And that retro Turbo saddle!

Not to mention a few nifty features on the frame that you just don’t see anymore: a chain hanger for when you’ve got yourself a puncture in the back, fitting for fenders and racks in both the front and back and low-fuss center pull cantilever brakes.
