Bicycle polo: Two Wheels Good, Four Wheels Bad

Bike poloFirst of all, who thought to play polo on two-wheeled cycles? The answer is Richard J. Mercredy of Ireland’s County Wicklow way back in 1891. Fast-forward 120 years and you can see some urban mallet-swinging in the heart of Beijing, thanks to the fixed-bike fanatics of Natooke. They recently gave us the 411 on this two-wheeled version of four-on-four.

Beijing Tourism: Natooke

110920 Beijing Tourism

Natooke is an oh-so-niche trick cycle and juggling ball shop located in the Dongcheng district of Beijing. The fixed-gear bikes (from 2,800RMB) are circus standard, while the diabolos, rola bolas and the standard juggling balls are pretty cheap, too. Bike rentals and juggling workshops also offered. Stop in for a closer look at what’s new around Beijing.

Cycle China: Bikes in Beijing

110901-Cycle-China-bikes-in-Beijing Dupree, a 25 year old bike mechanic and advocate at Natooke-a fixed gear and juggling store– told me stories of his youth living in a Hutong with a big shared yard and a 400 year old tree. The yard provided a large flexible open space to ride and race with friends until someone falls down. Unfortunately, spaces like this are now protected from shenanigans by the government–reducing the available space for bike play in Beijing.

On Your Bike: Fixed Gear Revolution 2011

fixed gearThis week, Natooke is organizing a series of bike races for the fixed-gear bike set. The full schedule is here and the two big events are Thursday’s Scratch Race and Saturday’s Alleycat Race.

The Scratch Race is basically going to involve a circuit around the Olympic Forest–three full laps amounting to 19 km. Then, switch gears for the Alleycat Race, a more “relaxed” event: “it’s not just about the fastest,” says Sred Nisser of Natooke, “but about the smartest way around. It tests how much you know the city.”

To keep things fair, organizers will hand out maps of the course on the day of the race. Checkpoints will be spread all throughout the city, and you can speed through them any order you like–after an amusing little challenge, that is.

Registration is essential (for insurance purposes, naturally enough) and events are open only to those with a fixed-gear bike. Sign up online or e-mail beijingfg@hotmail.com for more details.

An Eveing (or Three) Wudaoying Hutong

a night

As summer reaches its soupy boiling point and bands start falling off the stage in a sweaty drunken haze (Bedstars!), I decided that it was time to get out for a night of open-air fun. My destination? Wudaoying Hutong.   Running between the Lama Temple and Gulou, Wudaoying has recently gentrified into a competitive hot spot with new storefronts turning over seemingly every month. My original plan was to map out a single night of fun. But after wandering around, I decided no fewer than three would do. Try ‘em out.

Ines Brunn’s Springtime Urban Riding Life
